Introduction to Lake MichelleA brief history leading up to the commencement of Lake Michelle Phases 1-3 Prior to Mr David Bridgman purchasing the area, Lake Michelle was a salt pan surrounded by low-lying aquatic scrub land. The areas around Lake Michelle were used for various types of agricultuire including mink farming, pig farming and chicken farming. The land was purchased by David Bridgeman from Mr John King in 1984. The first development proposal was granted by the Western Cape Regional Services Council, Carious outside institutions were consulted during this proposal phase including The University of Cape town who studied the different types of aquatic flora and fauna. Excavation work was carried out by WJM Construction and David Bridgman himself, giving us the lake as we know it today. Phases 1 -3 commenced in 1990 when the first show houses and the first private residents, Mr and Mrs Bradshaw built their house. Phase 1 -3 continued to develop and was mostly completed when the development of Phases 4 – 7 was approved in 2005. During this period, when the possible development of Phase 8 was being considered, an Environmental impact Study was completed which halted any future development of phase 8. It is interesting to note that the salt pan was used for motor bike racing during the Second World War and legend has it that there were some famous names that partook in these events. Lake Michelle was named after David Bridgman’s youngest daughter. |
